ShareThe Skin I’m In & The Hair I Wear: A Hands On Workshop For Parents of Black & Multi-Ra
The Black Parent Initiative (BPI), is hosting a hands on workshop on Sunday, May 20 from 12:30 – 4 p.m. at Champions Barbershop, 3827 NE Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. Register by midnight on Friday, May 18. There is a $30 fee for this workshop and scholarships are available. Childcare and refreshments will be provided. Parents and caregivers of Black and Multi-racial children will have the opportunity to connect with each other in a supportive environment. On the day of the event, stylists and barbers will be available to teach parents simple ways to take care of the various textured hair of children of color. The Mayor's Youth Advisory Board (MYAB) is hosting "The Next Step," a Youth Involvement Fair on Saturday, May 19 from 2-4 p.m. at the Beaverton City Library (12375 5th Street) in Meeting Rooms A and B. This free event helps high school students connect with local organizations and businesses to learn about volunteer and internship opportunities. Prizes will be raffled off at the event. Businesses and organizations attending this year's event include Maryville Nursing Home, Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District, Metro, Beaverton City Library, Edwards Center, Beaverton Hispanic Resource Center, Girls, Inc., and more. The Journey to Freedom Project Foundation presents Malcolm X Birthday Celebration Weekend, May 19-20. Events include, on Saturday, the 2nd Annual Black Men Breakfast with speaker Dr. Rick Lee, from 9 – 11 a.m. at the Umoja Center, Northeast 17th and Alberta. His theme is healthy living. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. there is a community service project to clean up the Umoja Center, then from 6 to 8 p.m., a screening of the Spike Lee film “Malcolm X,” with a rawfood/vegan potluck, also at the Umoja Center. ShareSt. Andrew Legal Clinic To Host 12th Annual Race for Justice
St. Andrew Legal Clinic will host the Portland legal community’s biggest 5K fundraiser on Saturday, June 16. The RACE FOR JUSTICE will begin and end at the beautiful Madeleine Parish in NE Portland. The Kids’ Fun Run starts at 9:15 am, and the 5K starts at 10:15 am. A beer and pizza brunch will be served after the Race and prizes will be awarded for fastest attorney and non-attorney (civilian) runners, largest team and best pledge-raisers. In 12 years, the Race has raised more than $1,250,000 to help the clinic provide low-cost legal services for families in need. Loaves & Fishes Centers, The Meals-On-Wheels People is seeking volunteer drivers to ensure homebound seniors receive nutritious meals and a bit of companionship this Memorial Day weekend. Volunteer drivers are needed on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, May 26, 27 and 28. For more information about how you can help, call Caroline Henry at 503.953.8123 weekdays or 503.953.8202 weekends. Since 1970 Loaves & Fishes Centers has provided a nutritional and social lifeline for seniors through 36 meal sites in Multnomah, Washington and Clark counties and Meals-On-Wheels delivery to homebound seniors. The Aging & Memory in the African American Community conference is the third conference organized by PreSERVE Coalition and is at University of Portland’s Buckley Center from 9 a.m. -- 3:30 p.m. This year’s event features presentations and workshops on the latest research into factors that contribute to the development of memory loss and dementia; methods to delay or prevent memory loss; and techniques for healthy aging in the African American community. Keynote speaker Monica Parker, MD, Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. The Northwest’s largest career fair celebrates its 20th year with a weekend of events for women and girls at the NECA-IBEW Electrical Training Center, 16021 NE Airport Way in Portland. Admission is free, with free parking, childcare and a free shuttle from the Gateway Transit Center located at 9900 NE Multnomah. The Fair’s two student days on May 17 and May 18 are already full. Saturday, May 19 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. is open to women and their families and will focus on events and activities offering information about how to get started in these blue collar careers. Rosewood Community meeting is this coming Wednesday, May 16th at 1pm at the Rosewood Cafe, 609 SE 162nd Ave. Come share your updates and get involved in the neighborhood! We need everyone's help to make this a safe, fun summer for Rosewood. Next Wednesday is also the first evening meeting for the "East Portland Neighborhood Violence Prevention Committee," being held from 6-8pm on Wednesday, May 16th at Papa's Pizza, 16321 SE Stark. We're excited to be working with the City of Portland Mayor's Office of Youth Violence Prevention to connect our youth with as many resources as possible.
